ORANGEBURG, SC – A second former South Carolina State basketball coach has passed.
Tonya Mackey, 57, died Thursday (Mar. 27) at Saint Joseph’s Candler Medical Facility in Savannah, GA, becoming the second SC State women’s basketball coach to die last week. SC State offers condolences and support to the Mackey family.
Former women’s basketball and golf coach Lyman Foster passed on Monday (Mar. 24). His Homegoing service is set for Friday, Apr. 4, at 11 a.m. at Simmons Funeral Home in Orangeburg.
Arrangements for Coach Mackey are entrusted to Adams Funeral Services of Savannah.

Mackey served as Lady Bulldog head coach for four seasons (2004-2008). She previously served as an assistant and as an associate coach before being elevated to the top spot.
She also played four seasons (1987-1990) for the SC State women, earning three letters and several team accolades, including Most Improved Player honors. She captained the Lady Bulldog squad as a senior.
A Savannah, GA native, Mackey is a 1991 SC State graduate.
